Martin Luther King Jr. Day

We Dream A World by Yolanda Renee King & Nicole Tadgell

This Monday we observe Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a time to reflect on the teachings and legacy of the great civil rights activist who advocated fiercely for justice and equality. His message of nonviolence in pursuit of social change continues to inspire people fighting oppression and discrimination.

At Goddard College, Martin Luther King Jr.’s vision aligns deeply with our mission and values. Since 1938, Goddard has been dedicated to empowering individuals and building a more just and equitable society. Goddard was one of the first colleges in the country to intentionally diversify its student body, welcoming people of all backgrounds at a time when many schools excluded minorities.

In his speeches, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. highlighted the irony of spending millions of dollars daily on the Vietnam War while unable to protect basic civil rights at home. He called out the disproportionate number of African Americans on the front lines and the diversion of resources from domestic programs aimed at poverty and unemployment.

Like Dr. King, Goddard believes that darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that. For over 80 years, Goddard has shone a light on injustice through education powered by creativity, community, and real-world engagement. We instill in our students the knowledge and ethical frameworks to understand complex social issues and drive progressive change. During this holiday, we recommit ourselves to carrying forth Dr. King’s dream into the future by growing a more diverse, thoughtful and compassionate community of positive change makers.

In support of higher education and social progress, here is a recent interview with MLK’s granddaughter, Yolanda Renee King where she discusses her new book called “We Dream A World” which encourages youth to forge ahead while echoing the legacy of their elders.
